Do You Know That Satanic Influence Is Real?
Satanic influence, as used in this article, is a reference to being pushed or pulled to do wrong, by the devil or something outside of one's self.
In our text (i.e., I Peter 5:8-11), Peter first of all urges his readers to resist the devil. And then he haves them to know that God will restore them, after they have suffered a little while.
We don’t spend enough time talking about resisting the devil. And every now and then we need to remind ourselves that we all must suffer, but we have some hope. In this devotional series, I want to suggest that we should work on resisting and suffering with hope.
In this particular devotional, let's focus on satanic influence. Peter declares that the devil is the enemy of believers. The devil is said to prowl around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. However, Peter says to his readers that they can and should resist him.
Satanic influence is real. Time will not allow us to do a thorough study of Satan. For those who have an interest, you would do well to look at the 33 mentions of devil and 53 mentions of Satan, in the New International Version (i.e., NIV) of the Bible.
However, let me at least say that even though there are some who doubt the existence of a superhuman evil personality, we must all agree that there are some superhuman evil influences in this world.
There is something that makes us want to do wrong, even though the Holy Spirit is trying to make us do right.
This that tempts us to do wrong is what we shall call the devil. There is something that pulls us away from helping the weak in our community. There is something that pulls away from helping people get right with God.
There is something that pulls us away from walking by faith in God’s Word. This pull away from the will of God is the work of the devil.
Satan is not our friend. In fact, he is our enemy. He is trying to kill us, as viciously as a roaring lion kills his prey.
Whatever pleasure we get from doing what the devil tells us to do, we can rest assured that it is as short lived as the pleasure that the mouse has with the cheese in the mouse trap.
The sexual pleasure that he offers is a trap. The unethical gain of money and stuff is a trap. The popularity and fame that he offers us is a trap. Any power that he offers is the detonator to a huge grenade. Don’t play with the devil; he is a killer.
Someone who is reading this devotional could testify that the devil always takes us further than we want to go, cost us more than we want to pay, and keep us longer than we want to stay. Say amen (smile)!
1. How conscious are you of satanic influence being both real and dangerous in your life, on a scale of one to five, with five being high?
2. Cite some examples of the devil working and trying to cause harm in your life?
Great and awesome God, I praise You for being a God who is more powerful than any satanic influence that I may encounter. I thank You for Your marvelous plan for Your people. I thank You for saving me and allowing me to be numbered among Your people.
I confess that I have not always lived as if I believed that Satan's ways are deadly for me. Nor have I always lived as if I believed that You are more powerful than Satan.
Sometimes I have lived as if I thought the devil was my friend and that his ways were better for me than your ways. Please forgive me for these and my many others sins, in the name of Jesus.
Please help me to live according to your blessed will for my life, instead of yield to satanic influence. Thank You, in the name or your Son and my Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Please complete the feedback form below.
