Do You Know That Being Alert Is A Part Of Resisting The Devil?

Resisting, as used in this article, is a reference to fighting against satanic influence. In our text (i.e., I Pet. 5:8-11), Peter first of all urges his readers to fight against the devil. And then he haves them to know that God will restore them, after they have suffered a little while.

We don’t spend much time talking about fighting against the devil. And every now and then we need to remind ourselves that we all must suffer, but we have some hope also. In this devotional series, I want to suggest that we should work on resisting and suffering with hope.

In this particular devotional, let’s focus on resisting. As big and as bad as the devil may be, we are not helpless. We must not allow him to simply have his way with us. Nor should we simply pray for God to make the devil leave us along. Our text urges us to fight against Satan.

Notice the four ideas included in fighting against the devil. We are to be self-controlled, alert, stand firm in our faith, and be aware that others are suffering the same thing that we are suffering.

The second suggestion for fighting against the devil is to be alert. Alert simply means to be watchful. Remember in Mark 13:33, Jesus taught us, in His parable, about being ready for His return and to be alert.

Don’t go through life ignoring the fact that there is a plot to destroy you. Furthermore, be aware that the more you try to line up with God’s will for your life, the more the devil will try to stop your progress.

Don’t be guilty of being as carefree and unaware of your surroundings as children are. Have you ever noticed how especially sheltered children are so unaware of their surroundings.

As long as they are playing or watching television (o playing video games - smile), almost anything can happen around them without their ever knowing it.

Grow up to be conscious of the devil’s presence and plot for your destruction. When things happen in your life, be alert and aware that the devil may be setting you up.

All that glitters is not gold. And all that looks bad is not bad. Seek the spiritual alertness, sensitivity, and discernment to navigate the dangerous designs and plans of the devil.

Self Examination
1. On a scale of one to five, with five being high, how well are you doing with being alert?

2. What are you going to do to improve in this area, within the next week?

Great and awesome God, I praise You for being a God who is more powerful than any satanic influence that I will ever encounter. I thank You for Your marvelous plan for Your people. I thank You for saving me and allowing me to be numbered among Your people.

I confess that I have not been as alert as I should have been. I have gone through portions of my life with my eyes essential shut to the possibility that the devil is trying to cause me harm. Please forgive me for these and my many other sins, in the name of Jesus.

Please help me to live a more alert life, as a way of resisting the devil. Thank You, in the name of Your Son and my Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Please complete the form below.
