Humbleness - All That We Have Is From The Lord

Humbleness, as used here, is a reference to thinking of yourself in realistic or low terms. A key idea in this series of devotionals, "The Blessed Lame Man," which is based on II Samuel 9:6-8, 13 is that, "We should be mindful of humility, blessings, and lameness."

In this devotional, let's focus on why you should work on being humble. No matter how much you have going for you, all that you have has been given to you by the Lord. God has made us and not we ourselves (see Ps. 100:3).

God has kept you and me alive. God has given us the ability to do what we do. James 1:17 teaches that every good and perfect gift comes from the Lord. And God has added to our ability His grace and favor. There are others who can do what you do, but they did not have the grace and favor.

There are some homeless people who are as smart and as industrious as you are, but God has shown you favor.

There are some children in foster care who are as promising as those we have brought into this world, but for some reason God has shown favor on our children. All that we have is because of the goodness of the Lord, not because of our own efforts.

Self Examination
1. List two or three things that you would be tempted to brag about, if it were not for your realizing that without God you would not have them.

2. What are you going to do to grow in this area?

Great and awesome God, the One who is the source of every good thing in my life, it is to You that I pray. Thank You for how You have blessed me, in spite of my not acknowledging that it was You who was blessing me.

I confess that too often I have simply enjoyed what You have been doing for me and acting like I did it by myself. Please forgive me, and help me to live according to Your perfect will for my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
