Stay Off of the devil's Menu

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (see I Peter 5:8, NIV)

Do you have trouble staying focused on living by God’s will? (Click here for articles on staying focused) Does it seem like every time you try to be still to read the Bible and pray that something comes up to distract you?

The problem may very well be the devil. Our text teaches us that the devil is our enemy. He is prowling around like a lion looking for someone to devour.

Whatever pleasure we get out of doing what the devil wants us to do is ultimately a deadly trap for us. The devil is never our friend. He is our deadly enemy.

Think about how a friend would not try to distract you from hearing and living by God’s life giving word, but the devil will. A friend would not try to get you to drink delicious poison (i.e., sin), but the devil will.

Make this the day that you behave as if the devil is really your deadly enemy.

Self-examination

1. What are some things that you should do to stay focused on God’s will, instead of getting caught up in the devil’s deadly tricks?

2. One a scale of one to five, with five being great, how well are you doing with the things that you have listed?

3. What will you work on TODAY to help you be more in line with God’s will?

Prayer

Great and awesome God, the One who warns me of the deadly devil, the One who helps me to focus on life and that more abundantly, it is to You that I pray.

Thank You for Your grace. I have fallen prey to the devil too many times. But You keep on giving me another chance.

Please help me to stay focused on doing Your will, instead of drifting off into the devil’s deadly tricks. In Jesus’ name, amen.
