Christian Weight Loss: 4 Tips to Help You Sleep Better

Dr. Michael Breus of the WebMD Weight Loss Clinic wrote in his article, "Can’t Shed Those Pounds," that many people can’t shed weight, because they are not sleeping. In this article, we will briefly look at four reasons why getting more sleep can lead to weight loss.

Dr. Breus writes that not getting enough sleep leads to feelings of hunger and fat storage. When people are hungry because they are not sleeping, they eat during the times they are supposed to be sleep. Also a lack of sleep does not allow the body to metabolize carbohydrates and leads to weight gain.

Below are four tips that should help people get more sleep.

1. Don't go to bed feeling hungry. When trying to maintain or lose weight, it is important to eat three meals and three snacks a day. Experimentation will help you find a proper balance of when to eat larger meals and where to put snacks that will leave you feeling satisfied for bed time. Some experts suggest eating every two to three hours. Try to avoid eating a large meal right before going to bed.

2. Exercise regularly. Exercising will help you get more sleep. Trying to get rid of extra energy and tiring yourself out will lead to better sleep. Exercising before bed is not a good idea because you will not be relaxed enough to fall asleep. Try exercising at least three to four hours before going to bed.

3. Avoid too much caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Too much of anything, especially caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, is not good for you. Caffeine and nicotine are both stimulants and makes a person more alert and less drowsy.

Alcohol has the opposite effect on the body, it is a depressant. It may help you go to sleep but you will have problems staying sleep.

4. Avoid naps. Napping during the day can interrupt the sleep cycle of a person who has problems sleeping. It is best to stay up until sleepy and go to bed at the proper time.

There are two schools of thoughts on the subject of napping. Some experts think that you should take a nap to make up for a few lost hours. They suggest taking a nap earlier in the day.

The other school of thought says to avoid naps, because it can make insomnia worst. If you are a person with insomnia and must take a nap, try to limit the nap to thirty minutes or less and early in the afternoon.

Conclusion: The four tips discussed today should prove to be helpful in your Christian weight loss program. Remember it is important to get the proper amount of sleep each day.
